ST.JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. – Two semi drivers were transported to the hospital following an accident on U.S. 31 Saturday morning.
South Bend Police received a call at approximately 10:23 a.m. regarding a collision between two semis on U.S. 31 just north of the Toll Road Bridge.
Police say a dark-colored vehicle crossed in front of a blue semi-truck. The semi driver attempted to brake but was unable to stop.
Authorities say a second semi traveling behind the blue semi was unable to stop in time, resulting in a crash between the two semis.
The South Bend Fire Department was called to the scene. It took approximately one hour to free the driver of the second semi vehicle who needed to be extricated from the cab.
Both semi drivers were transported to Memorial Hospital in South Bend for non-life threatening injuries.
The roadway was closed for several hours to clear the debris. The U.S. 31 bypass is back open as of Sunday morning.
Authorities are asking anyone who may have witnessed the accident to give them a call at 574-235-9201.
