Traffic stop results in crash and pursuit of a suspect in Sturgis

STURGIS, Mich. – The Sturgis Police Department posted to Facebook on Friday that officers attempted to make a traffic stop in the area of Chicago Road and Grove Street on a known wanted felon.

The 43-year-old Sturgis resident fled from police at a high rate of speed before crashing into a power pole and residence near the intersection of South Street and South Lakeview, reports said

Officers reported the suspect ran from the scene, but was arrested after residents alerted police when the suspect attempted to steal a bike a few blocks from the crash scene.

Out of an abundance of caution, Sturgis Public Schools were placed on shelter in place.

The suspect was arrested on preliminary charges of fleeing and eluding, resisting and obstructing, hit and run, larceny, and outstanding felony warrants.
