Traveling or booking a trip soon? Here's what to know

NOW: Traveling or booking a trip soon? Here’s what to know

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Jet fuel costs are being impacted by Iran’s blockage of the Strait of Hormuz, where a significant fraction of the world’s oil passes through.

Jet fuel is one of the airline industry’s largest expenses. Many major U.S. airlines say right now, strong ticket sales are offsetting higher costs.

As many navigate spring break trips and book future travel, ABC57 spoke with Michele Boyd, President and Owner of Signal Travel & Tours.

“Airfare is always fluctuating. There's no question about that. Yesterday I did some reservations that I priced last week. I rechecked them yesterday, they were actually down a little bit, not much, but a little bit. So, you can't assume they're all going to go up. It's supply and demand always, and the airline is not going to make money if they go out with empty seats. So, you need to plan ahead. If you see a rate that is within your budget, I would recommend buying it as soon as you can,” said Boyd.

The partial government shutdown of the DHS is also leading to TSA agents working without pay. This has led to longer lines at some large airports.

“The TSA lines are very long in larger airports and heavily traveled airports. Fortunately, we have a wonderful airport in South Bend that many people use, and things will go smoother in a smaller airport at this point,” said Boyd.

Boyd also says people assume flying out of larger airports like Chicago or Detroit is less expensive, but that's not always the case.

If your planning summer travel, Boyd says to be working on it now, especially around a holiday.

Here are TSA’s recommendations for travelers:

  • Check with their airline regarding the status of their flight.
  • Check with the airport website or app regarding security wait times.
  • Arrive early to avoid delays.
