Semi hit by train after stalling on railroad tracks on Boston Street

LAPORTE, Ind.— LaPorte Police were dispatched to the scene of an accident involving a semi-truck and train on Boston St. Wednesday morning.

Around 11 a.m., police say the 18 wheeler was stalled on the railroad crossing when the train crossing arms came down.

According to police, the driver was able to exit the vehicle before the train’s arrival.

Unable to stop, the west-bound train struck the truck between the cab and trailer.

The trailer was separated from the cab and remained on the south side of the tracks. The train crossing was damaged as well.

Police say the cause of the accident was likely the cold weather which could have caused the fuel lines to gel.

The driver told police the semi had stalled on E. Lincolnway but he had gotten it started again.

The crossing will be closed until Norfolk Southern finishes inspections and completes any needed repairs.
