St. Joseph County Police Department

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- The St. Joseph County Police Department announced on Wednesday that12 officers completed a 40-hour Crisis Intervention Team Certification Training course.

The training was hosted by St. Joseph County CIT and held at the South Bend Police Department.

Authorities say this specialized training equips first responders with the tools to recognize and respond effectively to people experiencing a mental health crisis.

They add it also focuses on safely diverting those with serious mental illness, substance use disorders, or intellectual/developmental disabilities away from the criminal justice system when appropriate.

This is only one of multiple groups of first responders who have taken this course in the area.

The SJCPD has had a Crisis Services Unit since it was established in 2021.
