Two arrested in Warsaw shooting Saturday morning
WARSAW, Ind. - Saturday at around 12:40 a.m., Warsaw Police responded to a report of shots fired at 139 E. Baker St, where officers found a 20-year-old male suffering from a gunshot wound to the back.
Police say the evidence suggested the shot was a contact wound, meaning point-blank range.
The victim was cared for by Lutheran EMS and Warsaw-Wayne Fire Territory personnel.
Officials say several people were on scene and initially detained during the investigation, with one subject taken into custody in the rear of the residence and later determined to be the alleged shooter, 18-year-old Michael Raul Ramirez.
Initial reports were that a physical fight broke out in the front yard of 139 E. Baker St., when several people arrived at the residence.
During the physical fight, a firearm was discharged, then placed into a vehicle at the residence, according to police.
The weapon, along with the vehicle, were seized as evidence in this case.
Police say Michael Raul Ramirez was interviewed and arrested preliminarily for criminal recklessness with a weapon, pointing a firearm, and battery with a deadly weapon, all felony charges.
During the investigation, officers observed an injury to the main suspect’s head.
Further investigation revealed this happened during the initial fight and believed to have been done with the use of brass knuckles.
Officers utilized a ladder, and in searched the roof of the residence, locating a set of brass knuckles, which was also taken in as evidence.
Police say as a result of this, 21-year-old Alonso Miguel Contreras, was also arrested for a felony charge of battery, causing moderate bodily injury.
The remaining people were interviewed and released.
The 20-year-old victim was initially driven to Lutheran Kosciusko Hospital to be stabilized before being flown to Lutheran in Fort Wayne.
At this time, his status has been listed as critical, but in stable condition in the ICU.
Officials state this is an active and on-going investigation.
