A 12-year-old and 14-year-old suffered serious injuries from the detonation of a homemade firework just before 2 p.m. Tuesday.

The Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety responded to the 600 block of Pavone for a person suffering a head injury from a firework.

When they arrived, they found one of the victims had his hand blown off and the other had injuries to his face.

Both children were taken to the hospital for their injuries.

Police do not know where they got the homemade device.

The investigation is ongoing.
