Two homes evacuated in South Bend due to gas leak

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Traffic is moving again after a construction crew hit a gas line in South Bend.

It happened around 12:30 p.m. on Monday at the intersection of Portage and Diamond.

Because of the wind, gas could be smelled from blocks away.

The fire department was on the scene to close streets and redirect traffic.

As a safety precaution, two houses on the corner had to be evacuated.

NIPSCO arrived within eight minutes of the call going out and were able to repair the gas leak.

Traffic was blocked off for about an hour.
