LA PORTE COUNTY, Ind. – A 20-year-old man is dead after police say he drove off an overpass and crashed onto the toll road hitting two semis.

Police say Smith was driving northbound on Holmsville Road in a 1995 Chevrolet and for unknown reasons drove off the overpass. He went airborne and struck a semi heading eastbound on the toll road.

The car then rolled multiple times through the median. Smith was ejected from the vehicle. His car continued into the westbound lanes where it struck another semi.

Medics airlifted Smith to Memorial Hospital in South Bend where he was pronounced dead. The semi drivers were not hurt.

Police blocked the interstate for four and a half hours as they investigated and cleaned up the scene.

Traffic is now back open.
