UPDATE: Officer-involved shooting results in the death of a female individual in South Bend
UPDATE: Indiana State Police release information about this afternoon's shooting incident, calling it an officer-involved shooting.
The Indiana State Police has been requested to investigate an officer involved shooting that happened this afternoon, May 6, 2026, at a gas station in the 3300 block of Portage Avenue.
Preliminary information indicates that at approximately 3:12 p.m. the South Bend Police Department was contacted by the mother of a 25-year-old female requesting a welfare check on her daughter that was believed to be in the area of Cleveland Road and Portage Avenue. The information provided to the South Bend Police Department also indicated that the female was possibly armed.
At approximately 3:29 p.m. officers with the South Bend Police Department and the St. Joseph County Police Department located the female at a gas station in the 3300 block of Portage Avenue. Shortly after encountering the female at least one officer is believed to have fired their weapon. Early review of surveilance footage shows the female produce a handgun prior to shots being fired by law enforcement. Officers on scene rendered aid to the female until medics arrived. Officers from several police agencies assisted the ambulance in getting to a local hospital by holding intersections. The female was pronounced deceased at the hospital at approximately 4:10 p.m.
This is an ongoing investigation that will include review of body worn cameras, in-car camera footage, and any additional surveillance footage. At the conclusion of this investigation all information will be given to the St. Joseph County Prosecutor for review.

UPDATE: Female individual involved in the shooting at the Philips 66 in South Bend, has died.
SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- According to a live interview with Indiana State Police Sgt. Ted Bonher, the police were called at 3:12 p.m. for a welfare check on a female individual, requested by the individual's mother, due to a mental episode.
Officers had been informed that the female individual may have been armed. At 3:29 p.m. the individual was located at the location Phillips 66 gas station off of Portage Avenue. Two minutes later came a call of 'shots fired.'
Aid was rendered immediately and the individual was transported via ambulance to the hospital. Officers from multiple departments assisted the ambulance by holding back traffic through busy intersections.
Unfortunately, at 4:10 p.m. the victim succumbed to her injuries. No officers were injured during the altercation.
Officer Bohner stated that the exact events during the altercation are as yet unknown and will be investigated using body-worn cameras and security footage. It was confirmed by the SB police chief that one SB officer did fire his weapon, but that was the only detail confirmed so far.
Multiple agencies were on the scene, including SBPD, the St. Joseph County Police Department, and the Indiana State Police. The investigation will be led by Indiana State Police and is on-going.
South Bend police chief Scott Ruszkowski stated the State Police were requested to handle the investigation due to the multiple agencies involved.
