UPDATE: Firefighters contain fire at Liberty Tire Recycling

NORTH LIBERTY, Ind. -- A fire at a tire recycling plant in North Liberty had State Road 23 shutdown on Wednesday morning.

The fire sparked at Liberty Tire Recycling, located at 906 S. State St.

A manager at the office told ABC 57 News that a 6-inch pile of tire shreds developed a hot spot and caught fire around 11:30 a.m. She spoke to us at the office on-site and said that the fire was out, for the most part, at 12:45 p.m.

People nearby, at Potato Creek State Park, could still see the smoke from the main gate. One of our viewers also reported that smoke is also visible in Walkerton, over 6 miles away.

The St. Joseph County Police had to redirect traffic for safety concerns. State Road 23 was shut down, but is now re-open for thru traffic.

St. Joseph County Fire said there were six different fire departments at the plant, who helped to extinguish it.

Dispatch said the incident did not prompt any evacuations in the area.
