UPDATE: Semi and SUV collide in Starke County

STARKE COUNTY, Ind. -- We are following breaking news out of Starke County.

Witnesses said there was a large fire along with several explosions on Tuesday night on State Road 421.

Witnesses told us that a semi and a SUV collided around the curve to San Pierre.

The collision started a fire, and some of the tires exploded. Those explosions could be heard for blocks!

An officer at the scene told us that a semi was headed northbound on U.S. 421. A Dodge Callibur was going southbbound and was turning to exit onto Fisher Street.

The semi tried to swerve out of the way. The car struck the fuel tank. The car then spun into the grass off the road and went into a building.

The male semi driver was carrying mattresses on his way to New York. He said he was not injured and refused treatment.

The woman driving the car was in her late 30s. She was taken to IU Health Starke in Knox to treat her bumps and bruises.

Police said that they will ticket her for driving left of center.
