VA Secretary visits Michiana

The new Mishawaka VA Clinic is set to open in about a year.

Friday, Secretary of the VA Bob McDonald visited the South Bend VA Clinic.

“When we build a new facility like we are here in St Joseph, more people will come and we’ll have to provide more capability,” McDonald said.

McDonald was invited to Michiana by Congresswoman Jackie Walorski.

“It’s such an expansion of services,” Walorski said of the future Mishawaka center.

Outpatient and mental health services will be available at the new facility.

It will also have audiology services, a prosthetics department, and more.

“We will add additional services as we grow,” Jay Miller, acting director of Indiana VA healthcare said.

Miller is overseeing the project.

Construction started this month, but when it’s finished, miller says it won’t just be helping veterans.

“We’ll be bringing in 150 new jobs within the community,” Miller said.
