Vehicle drives into St. Joseph River following pursuit

ELKHART, Ind. – A South Bend man was arrested after allegedly driving a vehicle into the St. Joseph River following a police chase, the Elkhart Police Department reported.

At 8:08 p.m. Saturday, an officer was at the intersection of W. Marion Street and S. 2nd Street conducting routine patrol when he witnessed a yellow truck speeding north on S. 2nd Street.

The truck allegedly sped up and ran a stop sign when the officer turned on his lights and sirens at the intersection of W. Washington and N. 2nd Street.

The officer ended the chase, per Department policy, and saw the vehicle continue north on N. 2nd Street, which dead ends into the St. Joseph River.

The officer drove to where the vehicle left the road and saw the yellow truck floating downstream.

A man was swimming away from the vehicle toward the river bank.

The man, later identified as 31-year-old Andrew Siciliano, was taken into custody.

After the truck was taken out of the river, investigators confirmed it had been reported stolen out of Elkhart County earlier that same evening.

Siciliano was arrested for theft of a motor vehicle, reckless driving, and resisting law enforcement.
