Volunteers help stuff boxes for Christmas dinner

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Dozens of volunteers from the Salvation Army, the local 4-H club and Rough Riders gathered in a warehouse on Olive Street to fill food boxes for those in need.

With the help of an assembly line, volunteers stuffed non-perishable items like gravy, oatmeal and all the fixings for a Christmas dinner.

The boxes will feed over 1,000 local families this year.

"This is a real community effort. I think its a really exciting endeavor," Libby Unruh, social services director at the Kroc Center. "Everything that the Salvation Army collects and all the assistance the Salvation Army provides over the holidays and throughout the year goes straight back into St. Joseph County."

After five hours of packing, they had stuffed 1,100 boxes for local families.
