UPDATE: Wakarusa boil order lifted Wednesday

UPDATE: According to town officials, the boil order advisory for Wakarusa has been lifted as of 10 a.m. Wednesday morning.

WAKARUSA, Ind. -- Officials with the Town of Wakarusa say that around 8 a.m. Monday morning, members of the water department discovered a chlorine issue at the water treatment plant.

"Chlorine levels at the plant and in the system are lower than the level required by Indiana Department of Environmental Management," Water Superintendent Alex Mikel said. "As a pre-caution, a Boil Water Advisory is being issued. Once chlorine is restored, the Water Department will have to take samples to ensure that the water is safe to consume again."

Mikel says that process could take up to 48 hours to get confirmation.

"During this 48-hour time period, water used for cooking or drinking must come to a full boil for at least three full minutes before using," Mikel said. "We would like to thank everyone for their cooperation during this repair and we encourage you to call or email the water department if you have any questions or concerns."

The Wakarusa Water Department can be reached by phone at (574)862-4362 or by emailing [email protected].

The water department will notify the community when the Boil Water Advisory is lifted.
