SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- January and February are typically the cloudiest months of the year. For many, it feels like 2020 has been especially cloudy. Compared to the last few years, however, we are just about right for number of sunny days.
In January and February 2018, there were eleven days of sunshine. Last year, there were just seven sunny days during these months. This year, although it has seemed cloudier, South Bend is right on track with nine days of sunshine so far.
If we are on track, why is it that we feel so cloudy this year? The answer might be because we haven't seen a streak of sunshine this year. Looking at the sky cover calendars this year, each sunny day is separated by a stretch of cloudy or partly cloudy days.
Sunny winter streaks are not very long anyway, with the longest in 2018 and 2019 both just four days long. This year, the longest streak we have had is just two days long. Because our sunny days have been nonconsecutive, maybe that is why we feel like we are missing out on sunshine this year.
We have plenty of sunshine for the weekend, so be sure to get outside and enjoy our break from the clouds.
