West Nile Virus found in Elkhart County

The Elkhart County Health Department says adult mosquitoes collected for samples during September have tested positive for the West Nile Virus.

According to the department, this is an indicator the disease is present in the county and residents are being asked to be cautious of mosquitoes.

So far this year, the Indiana State Department of Health reports 12 people had West Nile Virus.

Two people have died from the virus.

Officials are asking that you avoid mosquitoes by wearing insect repellent containing DEET, wearing long sleeves and pants, as well as staying indoors during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are more likely to bite.
