Westbound lanes of Toll Road shut down due to major accident

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- One westbound lane of the Indiana Toll Road is back open following a major accident involving 10 cars and eight semi trucks.

Indiana State Police report the accident happened around 2:50 p.m. near mile marker 58.

Westbound lanes were shut down as ISP diverted traffic from the toll road at exit 72 near U.S. 31.

Officials say traffic incidents like this occur when drivers come to close to one another without accounting for the icy roads which make it difficult to slow down.

This accident is currently being investigated by Indiana State Police.
