NOW: What to know before booking travel for 2026

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Michiana-based travel advisor Valerie Baker-Wynn spoke with ABC57’s Jordan Tolbert to prepare for the upcoming summer travel season.

She says fares are trending slightly higher, though not enough to impact travel plans significantly right now.

“Most of my spring and summer travel has already been booked. So, they booked previously with lower rates. So, I'm not seeing last-minute bookings per se, so that is something to keep in mind as well, booking further in advance does help in this situation,” said Baker-Wynn.

Jet fuel prices are spiking due to the war in Iran. So how does that directly impact your travel plans?

“What I'm seeing for domestic or for the top five lines is they're consolidating flights or routes, and that's kind of combating those higher costs. By doing that, I'm also seeing them raising prices on luggage. So, I'm seeing anywhere between five and $10 more for across-the-line on cost for luggage. So, they're combating the pricing in different ways,” said Baker-Wynn.

She says it's not too early to be making your plans for later in the year.

“I'm seeing a lot of festive time and Thanksgiving time, resorts and hotels already sold out. So again, the sooner the better. Just for those, you always have to remember that holiday time is actually one of the more expensive times because it's so popular,” said Baker-Wynn.

If you are travelling internationally, Baker-Wynn says to make sure you understand the rules for any country you're visiting.
