Wind gusts cause high waves, drifting sand at Silver Beach

Whipping winds and lake effect rain made for some tough conditions at Silver Beach on Lake Michigan. Many residents went to Silver Beach to see the 10-15 foot waves caused by the wind gusts.

Gusts on the lake peaked at about 55 miles per hour at noon Thursday.

The wind blew sand everywhere, including on the roadway and parking lot.

There were times you couldn't see the pier leading to the lighthouse because of the waves.

Sue Betz said the high waves, blowing sand and gusty winds were exciting.

"We love the sound of the waves and the wind and the sand pelting against our cars. And it's just an excitement," said Betz.
