ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. – Winter-like temperatures have arrived in Michiana and now, before it gets too cold, is the right time to prepare your home for the winter months.

“Every year before the air conditioning season, before the heating season, your equipment should be checked. It should be as routine as changing the oil in your car, that way we know that it's in good operating condition, it’s safe, and we're getting optimal efficiency out of it,” Bart Smith, the president of Henry Smith Plumbing, Heating and Cooling said.

As winter quickly approaches, Smith said now is the best time to winterize your home and protect it from any possible damage. In order to do that, he said it’s best to make sure everything is in working condition and to hire a licensed knowledgeable contractor.

Smith said it’s important to check the batteries in your thermostat and make sure all flue vents are clear and free of debris.

“As we get into colder temperatures, ice damming is very prevalent with high-efficiency furnaces because they are condensing which means they create condensation or moisture, so when that occurs and if the flue vent is not put in correctly and now we get condensation and it's dripping out that can cause problems on the exterior as it freezes,” Smith said.

Smith said it’s extremely important to get all your equipment serviced and checked by a licensed contractor to make sure everything is working properly.
