MALONE, Wis. --  Sturgeon spearing season began this weekend, according to The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.

Hundreds gathered for the annual tradition on the frozen waters of Lake Winnebago for opening day on Feb. 9.

Wisconsin DNR Warden Sam Haferkorn and Malone resident Jeremy Kraus are pictured with Kraus' catch, a 115.5 pound sturgeon measuring 70.8 inches.

The Winnebago system hosts one of the largest sturgeon populations in the world, according to conservation officers.
