Woman, child safely evacuate structure fire in South Bend
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – South Bend Fire crews responded to a residential fire Monday afternoon.
According to fire officials, at approximately 11:32 a.m. crews responded to a fire at 1345 N. Brentwood Court.
Two passerbys and two active-duty military personnel from Panama City and Guam saw the flames and stopped to assist at the scene.
The four subjects used a fire extinguisher and a garden house to help control the spreading flames until fire crews arrived.
Upon arrival, firefighters searched for occupants or victims as they worked to extinguish the blaze.
The South Bend Fire Department reported no injuries.
A woman was in the residence at the time of the fire along with her newborn. They were able to evacuate the building safely, authorities say.
The investigation into the blaze revealed it began in the kitchen as a result of an unattended pan of oil left on the stove.
