Woman dies in police custody

LA PORTE, Ind. – A woman in custody at the La Porte County Jail was found dead Saturday night.

A Jail Supervisor found 35 year-old Andrea Roberts unresponsive in her assigned cell at approximately 10 p.m.

According to officials the Supervisor immediately began resuscitation efforts before La Porte County Emergency Medical Services arrived.

EMS then transferred Roberts to the La Porte Hospital where she was pronounced dead by medical staff.

Officials with the La Porte County Jail say Roberts had been incarcerated since June 2, 2017.

Roberts was being held on several warrants that included misdemeanor and felony charges according to police.

The La Porte County Coroner’s Office is assisting with this incident in order to determine a cause of death.

Officials from the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office Detective Bureau are handling the circumstances of this event as an ongoing and fluid investigation.
