Woman found guilty of murder in 2024 fatal shooting

St. Joseph County Jail

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The suspect charged with murder in a shooting on Parry Street has been convicted on all counts.

Rya Barnes was found guilty by a jury after a five-day-long trial. She is convicted of Murder, two counts of Battery by Means of a Deadly Weapon, Criminal Recklessness, and Criminal Recklessness Committed with a Deadly Weapon.

Barnes was arrested shortly after the shooting on June 20, 2024. 28-year-old Jasmine Swanson was found with a gunshot wound to the head and pronounced dead at the scene. Two more women with gunshot wounds arrived at the hospital from the same scene.

According to court documents, Barnes had gotten into an argument with a woman on social media earlier in the day, with messages mentioning fighting each other. Later, Barnes drove her vehicle past the woman's home on Parry Street and began shouting. Barnes then turned the car around before firing shots at the home, striking three people. Investigators said multiple people were outside at the time, and children were found inside of the home after the shooting.

Barnes is now expected to be sentenced in January.
