KOSCIUSKO COUNTY, Ind. -- A South Whitley woman died in a vehicle crash on US30 early Monday morning, according to the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department.

Deputies and EMS responded to a crash at US30 and SR 19 around 3:40 a.m. Monday.

When deputies arrived, they located 52-year-old Vicki Bartz pinned inside her vehicle. Paramedics requested the assistance of the Kosciusko County Coroner Office and she was pronounced dead at the scene, deputies said.

The preliminary investigation revealed Bartz was traveling westbound on US30 when she stopped for a traffic light at the intersection with SR 19.

A semi, which was also westbound on US30 rear ended Bartz's vehicle, deputies said.

Deputies say the driver, Waldemar Palys, told deputies he may have fallen asleep before the crash.

The crash remains under investigation.
