Woman pulled over by police impersonator

ELKHART, Ind. -- The Elkhart Sheriff's Department received a report of a man who pulled over a driver on CR17 at the US20 bypass Monday around 10:15 p.m.

The victim told police she was pulled over by a man in a small white car with red and white flashing lights.

When the driver approached her car, he was wearing baggy blue jeans and a black hooded sweatshirt with the hood up. He told her he stopped her for speeding.

The victim asked for his police identification, but he did not produce any.

She drove away and called 9-1-1.

The man also left the scene.

The sheriff's department says a legitimate police officer, deputy, trooper or any other officer will either be driving a marked police car with red and blue lights or will be in uniform if driving an unmarked vehicle.

If you are stopped and you have any doubt, call 9-1-1 and they will be able to determine if the person is a legitimate law enforcement officer.

If you have any information in this case, text ECSDTip and your tip to 847411, on the Elkhart County Sheriff's website or call 574-533-4151 with information.
