Woman who nearly hit two kids passing school bus charged with neglect of dependent in separate case

St. Joseph County Police Department

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- A woman charged with nearly hitting two students while driving past a stopped school bus has been arrested in a separate incident.

24-year-old Shau-Ri Sparkle Rae Rose now faces one count of Neglect of a Dependent.

According to court documents, police were called to West 7th Street on two occasions for domestic disturbances. The first time, officers spoke to a man who reported that Rose had stolen his handgun while moving her things out. She reportedly denied taking the gun, but another person at the home said Rose put the gun in her car as she was leaving.

Officers were called to the residence again the next day when Rose came back to get more of her belongings. Rose told officers they could search her car for the gun. Officers then located a twenty-one-month-old child in the back of the vehicle. He was sitting in a car seat, but the seat itself was reportedly not secured to the vehicle itself in any way. Officers then allegedly found a children's shoe box on the ground beneath the child, with a handgun hidden inside. The handgun was semi-automatic and had one round in the chamber with no safety mechanism.

Rose is currently on pre-trial release for her initial arrest involving the stopped school bus. In that incident, Rose told investigators that her son unstrapped himself from the car seat, so she looked back. When she turned back around, she noticed the school bus and was unable to stop.
