ELKHART, Ind. -- October is Domestic Violence Awareness month.
According to the National Coalition for Domestic Violence, over 40% of women and nearly 30% in Indiana have experienced some form of domestic violence and or stalking in their lifetime.
The YWCA of North Central Indiana is already spreading awareness with the help of leaders across Elkhart including Mayor Rod Roberson.
He made a proclamation declaring Elkhart would be partnering with local law enforcement and business owners to recognize the awareness month.
“We encourage domestic violence survivors and their families to break the silence and to reach out for help,” he said in his proclamation.
Tuesday morning, they launched a new campaign to raise awareness and let victims know that help is out there.
They are asking employers to hang posters with concealable safety cards in every restroom stall in St. Joseph and Elkhart counties.
“Often times the only place our women and men are allowed to go is into the workplace so it’s very important employers know and recognize domestic violence when they see it,” said YWCA CEO Susan Tybon.
If you are in need of help, you can pick up the phone and call their hotline 1-866-YES-YWCA.
