12-year-old suffers severe hand injury in fireworks explosion

BERRIEN TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- A 'mortar' style firework exploded and injured the hands and face of a 12-year-old boy Sunday evening, according to Michigan State Police.

Troopers were called to a home in Berrien Township around 10 p.m. to assist at the scene.

The initial investigation revealed the firework instantly exploded while the 12-year-old was lighting it.

Two adults nearby at the scene were not injured.

Police said the 12-year-old suffered the partial amputation of one hand and minor injuries to the other hand and face.

The victim was taken to Borgess Memorial Hospital in Kalamazoo, then was transferred to the University of Michigan hospital in Ann Arbor for surgery.

The incident remains under investigation.
