14-year-old shooting victim still hospitalized after Monday afternoon shooting

ELKHART, Ind. — An Elkhart neighborhood is still trying to piece together what led to a 14-year-old being shot Monday afternoon shortly after getting off the bus.

On Tuesday, the intersection of West Jefferson and North 6th Street was quiet, however that wasn't the case Monday afternoon around 4 p.m.

The intersection was blocked off with police tape; red and blue lights were flashing everywhere and there were at least eight evidence markers on the ground. Police tape can still be seen tied around trees on North 6th Street.

ABC57 went door to door talking to neighbors Tuesday afternoon about what they saw or heard. One man we spoke with said he found the victim on the ground and rushed over to help him.

ABC57 asked for an interview with the Elkhart Police Chief about this case and other recent acts of violence. They declined but we expect to talk to him on Wednesday at a news conference.

The Elkhart Police Department reports a call came in around 4:01 p.m., Monday, for a shooting with injuries at the intersection of West Jefferson and North 6th Street.

Authorities were told a teen male was walking when a vehicle stopped and a suspect or suspects got out.

Police say that's when and interaction occurred between the teen and the suspect(s), at which point he was shot.

According to police, the teen victim was taken to the hospital in serious condition.

Police were seen going door to door talking to neighbors trying to figure out what happened. ABC57 spoke with two high school students who were fighting through tears telling us they had just gotten off of the bus with the victim and shortly after, learned about the shooting from a friend who lives close by.

Neighbors tell us their neighborhood is very active during that time of day with kids walking home from their bus stop. Neighbors gathered together trying to figure out what happened but also sharing their strong dislike for the multiple shootings in the area, especially involving minors.

Those same neighbors tell us this is starting to happen more often in the community and following a weekend of violence involving minors, this shooting in broad daylight is too much for the community.

We will update this story as we learn more.
