Cause of death of second ICE detainee at Miami Correctional ruled natural

ABC 57

MIAMI COUNTY, Ind.--- ABC57 obtained the autopsy report for Tuan Van Bui, who died in federal custody at Miami Correctional Facility in early April.

His cause of death was deemed "hypertensive arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease." His manner of death was deemed natural.

According to the press release from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Van Bui died on April 1. However, his autopsy report lists his date of death as April 2. His autopsy was performed the same day.

Miami Correctional Facility has served as an ICE detention center since October 2025.

On April 9, the ACLU of Indiana released a call for transparency and accountability after two ICE detention deaths in less than two months. The first was the death of 59-year-old Lorth Sim, who was found unresponsive in his cell on Feb. 18. His autopsy report, obtained by ABC57, shows his manner of death natural and his cause of death "atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease with other significant conditions of diabetes mellitus."

The Indiana ACLU's statement reads in part:

"While official statements may point to the immediate circumstances of death in Mr. Sim’s case, they do not answer the critical questions about whether people detained at Miami Correctional Facility are receiving adequate medical monitoring, timely access to care and appropriate treatment for serious and chronic health conditions while in custody. Two deaths in less than two months raise serious concerns about conditions inside the facility, the adequacy of oversight and whether the safety and rights of those held there are being protected."
