ISP investigating death of 82-year-old inmate at Miami Correctional Facility
ABC 57 MIAMI COUNTY, Ind.--- Another man incarcerated at Miami Correctional Facility has died, and the Indiana State Police (ISP) Criminal Investigations Division at the Peru Post is investigating.
The decedent was identified as 82-year-old Billy A. Wilson, according to ISP. An autopsy will be done to determine the exact cause of death.
This update comes after ABC57's Annie Kate received a news tip from a concerned family member of another incarcerated individual detained in proximity to Wilson. According to that family member, Wilson screamed for help, and other inmates also began shouting to attract the attention of guards. At this time, the Indiana Department of Correction (IDOC) has not yet responded to news inquiries about what happened.
ISP investigators are working with the Miami County Coroner's Office and Miami Correctional Facility investigators. ISP is not releasing any more information at this time.
Wilson's death is among several others this year at the IDOC facility. On April 4, ISP confirmed 50-year-old Shawn Booker died while incarcerated at Miami Correctional.
Part of the Miami Correctional Facility campus is serving as a federal immigration detention center, holding Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainees since October 2025. On Feb. 18, ISP confirmed 59-year-old Lorth Sim was found unresponsive in his cell. On April 1, 55-year-old Tuan Van Bui was also found unresponsive, according to the ACLU of Indiana.
In response to a public records request, IDOC released data showing the death of a 27-year-old inmate on Jan. 29 but does not specify if it was a natural or unnatural death, and says an autopsy is still pending.
The records show two "natural" deaths in February, but autopsies are pending.
