23-Year-old South Bend woman critically injured in crash has died

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- A South Bend woman who sustained critical injuries in a crash earlier this month has died.

23-year-old Heather Baker was being treated at South Bend Memorial Hospital for injuries she sustained in a head-on collision.

Family and friends have shown an outpouring of support since the crash on both Baker's and her boyfriend's Facebook walls. A source close to the family has confirmed that Baker died on Tuesday.

The crash happened on Sunday, June 3, just after midnight.

Deputies and rescue workers responded to the accident at US 12, west of Bakertown in Bertrand Twp.

Baker was driving her 1996 Chevy Cavalier when she crossed the center line into the path of 2003 Ford Ranger. The vehicles collided head-on, causing injuries to everyone involved.

Baker's boyfriend, 34-year-old Roman Estrada was in the car with her at the time of the collision. He was treated and released.

The driver of the Ford Ranger was also treated and released.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation.

A benefit will be held at the end of the month to help Baker's family with funeral costs. The benefit is scheduled from noon to midnight on June 30 at Chippewa Bowl (225 W. Chippewa Avenue) in South Bend. For more information, call (574) 291-5093.
