59-year-old man convicted of felonies after shooting at couple fishing

Britt Allen Weaver

CASS COUNTY, Mich. -- The Cass County Prosecutor's Office announced Wednesday that a 59-year-old Indiana man was found guilty of multiple felonies resulting from a shooting incident on May 3, 2025.

The man, Britt Allen Weaver, was found guilty around 1:40 p.m., Wednesday, after the jury deliberated for about two hours.

Weaver was found guilty of two counts Assault with a Dangerous Weapon, Felonious Assault, and two counts of Weapons - Felony Firearm.

Case documents reveal on the afternoon of May 3, 2025, a couple was fishing on Christiana Creek off Cassopolis Road and Mt. Zion when the incident occurred.

The victims testified that shortly after arriving that day, they were approached by Weaver, who they said was visibly upset they were there.

Documents state Weaver accused the couple of being involved with local thefts and after a verbal altercation he went back to a nearby property where he was staying.

The couple said they then decided to leave the area, but as they left, they heard a gunshot coming from the direction of Weaver.

At this point the two called police.

Cass County deputies arrived on scene and apprehended Weaver. Authorities also found the firearm, an AR-15.

Authorities say Weaver gave them contradictory statements upon being arrested.

Weaver told police the couple were driving a similar car to that of someone suspected of being involved with recent thefts.

Deputies testified that Weaver also made incongruous claims about the direction he was shooting.

Authorities say Weaver initially admitted to shooting in the couple's direction before later changing that statement.

Weaver's bond was revoked after the jury conviction.

Weaver is scheduled for sentencing on April 10. He faces up to 10 years in prison.
