Officials offer the latest details regarding this morning's shooting of a LaPorte County Sheriff's Deputy
MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. -- A scary scene at Franciscan Health this morning.
It all started around 6:45 Central time Friday morning, near State Road 2 and 900 West, about a mile east of Westville. LaPorte county deputy Jon Samuelson stopped to assist a disabled vehicle, driven by 22-year-old Sharod Grafton junior of Chicago.
Grafton asked to be taken to the hospital, but investigators don't yet know why.
"The suspect had been involved in earlier criminal activity, whether it be this morning, last night, I don't know. The deputy was informed of this criminal activity and that the suspect was a suspect in that or was involved in some way, went back in to discuss it with him, and that's when this altercation took place," said Sargeant Glen Fifield, Indiana State Police.
That altercation between the suspect and the deputy in the emergency room area led to shots being fired. Law enforcement quickly swarmed the hospital to try and get the situation under control.
Deputy Samuelson was shot three times, before Grafton ran to a wooded area west of the hospital. Officers found Grafton in the woods and arrested him. During the search, they also discovered a handgun they believed he used in the shooting.
Grafton is currently being held in the Porter County jail but will be charged in LaPorte county.
"He's being held in Porter County because the LaPorte County sheriff's office is involved in this shooting, their deputy was involved in this shooting, for full transparency and safekeeping, sheriff Balon has offered to house him at his facility, which is the proper thing to do."
"The suspect was not injured, did not sustain any injuries prior to him being transported to the hospital by deputy Samuelson, he was not injured after being taken into custody, he has no injuries," said Sargeant Fifield.
Franciscan Health hospital is still open and accepting patients, while Indiana State Police continue their investigation.
