Dowagiac graduate overcomes his biggest match off the mat
DOWAGIAC, Mich. -- From the wrestling mat to the graduation, Weski Wesaw has proven no obstacle can keep him down.
As a follow-up to our coverage on Wesaw and his fight with bone cancer, Weski walking the graduation stage with his new prosthetic shows a triumphant story of bravery and resilience.
"They said in total I came half of my school year for freshman year, so I came back and they were like, well, you're behind, I don't know, I don't think you're going to graduate for 2026, and it hit me pretty bad," said Wesaw. "When I stood up, I was like, this is really happening. It was like it felt like slow motion, like everything was slow, and I was slowly like getting up, and like my name was called. It was awesome."
He was surrounded by cheers from his fellow classmates, faculty members, and of-course family.
"My son's here, he just walked across the stage, you know. I mean, he's the first Wesaw to walk across the stage on my side," said Kyle Wesaw, Weski Wesaw's father. "It does me good just to see him fulfill his things, that means everything to me. To see him walk again without crutches, it's a blessing. You can't describe, you know, on spot, how proud I am of him."
Weski Wesaw plans on going to Southwestern Michigan College and majoring in Business along with engineering classes.
He will continue to compete in wrestling.
"Thank you to everybody who believed in me and supported me along this adventure. I want to give thanks, and stay tuned, and watch, because I will do great things," said Weski Wesaw.
