Berrien County Health Department recognized for emergency preparedness
The Berrien County Health Department is getting recognized nationally for its ability to take care of the community around them.
The National Association of County and City Health Officials has named the Berrien County Health Department one of just 400 departments nationally who are "public health ready."
That means if something like a disease outbreak or chemical spill were to happen, the department is fully capable of helping people in the city of Benton Harbor and the surrounding area.
It's part of a partnership with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to identify the most ready departments in the country.
The Berrien County Health Department had to undergo an evaluation to make sure they are meeting national standards to keep their community prepared.
The department also had to show an effective plan with the cities in Berrien County.
That includes drills and exercises to make sure that if something does go wrong, the plan is executed well.
Overall, that could mean a healthier and safer Berrien County.
