JULY 9 UPDATE: The Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety has announced that as of 6:26 p.m., the Bicentennial Bridge has been repaired and is now reopen to traffic.

UPDATE: Harbor Master Mike Moran said Tuesday evening, crews were able to get the eastbound lanes down at various times and utilized them to travel between the east and west side.

Moran says the westbound lanes still didn't close properly and as such the bridge will remain closed to vehicle traffic until further notice.

He adds the bridge will be raised when personnel are not walking across it to allow vessel traffic through.

ORIGINAL STORY: ST. JOSEPH, Mich. -- Harbor Master Mike Moran announced Michigan Department of Transportation representatives were at the Bicentennial Bridge Tuesday morning still trying to determine the exact cause of the malfunction.

The bridge was stuck closed for several days following the failure of a hydraulic cylinder, which has since been replaced, but another issue left the westbound lanes unable to close.

Moran said the eastbound span is lowered while the westbound lanes remain up.

An MDOT representative said an out-of-state specialist was also brought in to assist in finding the cause of the malfunction.

MDOT says the bridge will remain closed to vehicle traffic into Thursday.

Traffic still is being detoured.
