GRANGER, Ind. -- On Tuesday, Governor Mike Braun signed Senate Bill 146 into law, which raises the minimum wage for teachers across the state Indiana.

The bill was authored by republican senators Jeff Raatz, Daryl Schmitt, and Granger's own Linda Rogers.

S.B. 146 requires schools to pay a minimum salary of $45,000 to their teachers, a $5,000 increase from the $40,000 minimum salary previously in place.

It also requires schools to spend at least 65 percent of their state tuition support on teacher pay and creates a study to determine "the feasibility of increasing school health plan options."

The bill still allows local school districts to determine teacher salaries but raises the floor on how little a district can pay.

"It is great to see teachers receiving more compensation for the hard work they do for our children," Rogers said. "Not only that, but this legislation will also ensure that our students are receiving the best education possible and that our schools remain well-staffed."

The bill also creates the Indiana Teacher Recruitment Program, which will provide grants for training and recruitment programs for teachers in high-need areas like STEM education.
