PHM School Board unanimously approves call for member’s resignation
NILES, Mich. -- There are concerns about a school bus beating in Niles.
Some parents are demanding answers about how a young student at Ballard Elementary got violently attacked, and why the bus driver did not take immediate action to stop it.
We are choosing not to air the video to protect the identity of the victim.
Speaking to some parents in the area who say bullying in Niles community schools has been a problem, they hope this situation sheds a light on the issue.
A pretty disturbing video taken on a Niles school bus shows a verbal fight between two students, with lots of cursing and yelling.
Things escalated to a physical fight with one fifth grade female student repeatedly hitting a younger male student in the head.
Niles community schools says its safety protocols require the bus driver to pull over as soon as safely possible to intervene.
The district saying, “Due to the noise throughout the bus and their focus on route and drop offs, the drivers did not hear the argument or witness the misconduct.”
David Oman, whose granddaughter goes to the school was on the bus when the fight broke out.
“She was just so close to the action, I was afraid she might get hurt and it's just a concern of a grandparent, you know she's just a little girl," said Oman.
Now Niles Community Schools says they are currently working with Niles Police Department on their investigation, and they are presenting their findings to the board tomorrow.
