Cass County man dies after falling into Lake Shavehead

A Cassopolis man has died after police say he fell into Shavehead Lake in Cass County.

It happened just after 11:00 Monday night. 

According to a press release, two men were sinking Christmas trees into the lake to attract fish.

The victim, 71-year-old Larry Malsch,  was on a boat, which capsized sending him into the water.

His friend, 56-year-old Christopher Habic, attempted to rescue him from another boat, but then fell into the water himself. He  swam to malsch and managed to bring him back to shore.

Malsch was was taken to Elkhart General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The case remains under investigation,
