SOUTH BEND, Ind.— The city of South Bend braved the cold and honored the life and message of the legendary civil rights activist, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., at the 38th annual celebration at the Century Center, Monday.
The full schedule of events kicked off with a recognition breakfast.
More than 60 years after Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Iconic words rang out at the Lincoln Memorial to call for an end to racism in the United States, those same words recited by Johnnie Johnson filled the century center’s Bendix Theater as the community honored his life and message at the annual MLK Day Celebration.
He shared what an honor it was to share the message of Justice and Equality, that he feels is a still relevant message today.
"You know I'm sure, and I know for certain that all over the nation that people are giving the Martin Luther King speech, inspired by what he was about. He was a man of discipline and a man of destiny and here we are all these years later’” he said before delivering the powerful words.
The day was filled with performances, speakers, and honorees in Dr. Kings Honor.
