NILES, Mich. – The Chapin Mansion in Niles is nearing the end of its reconstruction thanks to the public's help.
The renovation project was helped by crowdfunding in order to add more exhibits and events at the historical Niles structure.
Funding went also towards refurbishing the balcony and the porch of the building. The reconstruction will help make the mansion more accessible by adding a ramp for visitors.
Renovations have spruced up the mansion but developers said they want to preserve what makes the house historic.
“We are not changing any of the historical elements of the house. We recognize that the house is very unique. It has a very beautiful history. A lot of the original elements are still in place and the city was always very respectful of that,” said Christina Arseneau, the Niles History Center Director.
The campaign's goal is set at $15,000, and will be matched by MEDC’s Public Spaces Community Places if it is met.
Those wishing to contribute can still make donations at the crowdfunding website which will be up until March 8.
