Child dies in crash on I-94; 11 people involved in accident

STEVENSVILLE, Mich. - A child was killed Saturday afternoon after a crash on I-94.

Both vehicles were westbound at the time of the crash.

Troopers told ABC 57 News that there was only one person in one of the vehicles and 10 people in a mini-van.

Those in the mini-van were related.

"10 people was too many people for the mini-van," The trooper said. Although he wasn't able to confirm how many people the van could legally hold.

The crash happened at mile marker 23.

The child was not buckled in safely and was thrown from the van in the accident.

The child has not been identified, we are told that the child was between the age of 6-8.

Of the remaining 10 people involved in the crash only minor injuries were reported.

"No one was airlifted from the scene and I'm not sure how many people were treated for injuries," the trooper said.

The crash happened in the westbound lanes which lead to a full closure of those lanes westbound for about 15 minutes.

There was a partial lane closure all afternoon while investigators worked the scene.

"We wrapped things up there between 5 and 6 p.m." the trooper said.

Investigators will be back on the scene Sunday to conclude its investigation.
