Child safety awareness kicks off with car seat check stations around region

GOSHEN, Ind. -- Police departments around the region are participating in National Child Passenger Safety week with checks.

In Goshen on Monday, officers were at Lake City Bank off of Main Street where they were checking to make sure car seats were properly installed.

"One of the seats we checked as expired," said Trevor Winzonka of Safe Kids Elkhart. "A lot of people don't understand that there is an expiration date on these seats."

Meanwhile, Mishawaka police said that as many as 9 out of 10 car seats are misused.

On Tuesday, Mishawaka police will do free checks from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the fire station on Douglas Road in Mishawaka.

The event was hosted by Safe Kids of Elkhart.
