City of Buchanan uses molasses to treat roads and save money

BUCHANAN, Mich. -- If you think driving in the snow is as slow as molasses, listen to this!

The City of Buchanan is using molasses to treat its roads this winter. Right now, plows are mixing the stuff with road salt to save money!

The City Manager told us the molasses helps the salt stick to the pavement so it lasts longer!

"We're going to use less salt and again we're going to use less sand so it should be a cost for our city and our citizens,” said J.T. Adkerson with the City of Buchanan.

The molasses mix is also greener option because it isn’t toxic to the environment.

Buchanan city officials said they will use about 8-gallons of molasses for ever ton of salt.
