SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The eyesore on the city’s northwest side is another step closer to finding new life.
The city says they are entering phase two which will include demolishing remaining buildings, and foundations on the site.
Phase one was a collaboration with the US Environmental Protection Agency.
They removed all harmful contaminates from the site, including more than 10,000 tons of demolition debris contaminated with asbestos.
Now that the EPA’s work is done, the city will take over the remaining cleanup efforts.
The help from the federal government is estimated to have saved the city $3 million.
The city is not sure what is next for the 15 acres of land but will consider options as they scope out the next steps for phase three.
With much work left to be done, phase two is expected to carry the project into 2025.
