With the end of winter comes the beginning of road construction season. One project that has already affected traffic is the replacement of the US20 bridge over US31.
The steel beams of the bridge will be replaced and a new deck will be poured. The two-phase project is not expected to be complete until December, INDOT says.
Because the project will reduce traffic on US 20 to a single lane in each direction between Linden Road and Miami Street, drivers should expect delays.
“One side of the bridge will be completely closed to traffic, so traffic will basically merge down to one lane on one side, cross over to the other side which is also down to one lane, in the area where work is occurring, and then after the bridge—they’ll cross back over to the other side,” said Cassandra Bejak of INDOT.
The bridge was constructed in the 1970s and this kind of project, while time consuming, is necessary to keep drivers safe.
